Dr. Himansu S. Biswal is currently working at NISER as Associate Professor. He belongs to Bari, Jajpur Odisha. He obtained his M.Sc. degree in Organic Chemistry from Utkal University, Odisha, India, in 2002. He received his Ph.D. from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, India, where he worked with Professor Sanjay Wategaonkar studying the sulfur centered hydrogen bonds with supersonic-jet spectroscopy. He was a postdoctoral fellow with Professor Michel Mons at CEA, Saclay, France, where he investigated the structure and ultrafast excited state dynamics of peptides. Then he moved to Prof. Jennifer P. Ogilvie's research group at the University of Michigan, USA, to work on 2D-electronic spectroscopy. In 2012, he joined in the school of Chemical Sciences, National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), India, where he has established a research program focused on investigating unusual non-covalent interactions in biomolecules with electronic structure calculation, NMR and gas phase laser spectroscopy. Dr. Biswal has extensively worked in the areas of laser spectroscopy and computational chemistry. He has made fundamental contributions in the field of non-covalent interactions such as sulfur and selenium-centered hydrogen bond (S/SeCHB) and carbon bond (C-bond). By using a combination of supersonic-jet spectroscopy and electronic structure calculations, he has provided ample exciting information on S/SeCHBs. Their group is the first to report the gas-phase IR spectra of jet-cooled S/SeCHB complexes. As a young researcher, Dr. Biswal has already established himself as a leading contributor in the area of Non-Covalent Interactions through many significant publications in several international journals such as J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., J. Phys. Chem. Lett., ACS Central Science, etc. He is a recipient of the Young Scientist Award from Indian Society for Radiation and Photochemical Sciences (ISRAPS, BARC), INSPIRE Faculty Fellow from Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, Best Thesis Award from TIFR, and Best Post Graduate Award from Utkal University. Very recently, American Chemical Society's "The Journal of Physical Chemistry" has recognized seminal research contributions of Dr. Biswal and included him as one of the top young physical chemists in the world. The message from the journal reads as follows. JPC Young Scientist Issue "The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, B and C has published articles by Young Physical Chemists across the world spanning Theory, Experiments, and Spectroscopy. Eighty-two scientists have featured on this special Cover Image something which JPC has never done before in its 123 years of history."
